What is the cheapest airline to use when flying to Singapore from the Bay Area?

Q. I've been trying to book a flight to Singapore for winter vacation and I keep finding really expensive flights. The cheapest I've found is $1544.

A. If you plan on flying around the Xmas/New Year's travel period, $1,544 is about what can expect to pay these days. Flights from about a week or so before Xmas and the first week of Jan. are usually expensive for flights to Singapore and Asia.

You might check China Airlines (through Taiwan), they often have the least expensive flights to Asia from the Bay Area. Also check Cathay Pacific, Korean Airlines, Eva Airways, Singapore Airlines and travel websites like Kayak.com. Singapore Airlines, though often more expensive, has special discounts for tourists who fly their airline on hotels, restaurants, shopping and other attractions while in Singpaore, which may help defray the high cost of the air ticket.

In the Bay Area, also check the Chronicle's Sunday Travel section, they often have good prices from travel agents, and you might also check some Asian travel agencies in SF and the Bay Area that specialize in tickets to Asia, they often can get consolidated fares from some carriers. Good luck.
